The municipality of Westland is located in the province of South Holland, the Netherlands. It is also known as the “Glass City.” It boasts the world’s most innovative agricultural sector, is the fifth-largest economy in the Netherlands, and is home to more than 110,000 residents who live, work, study, and enjoy their leisure time there. With over 1,000 employees, effective internal communication is crucial.
Video Content for Effective Internal Communication
The Municipality of Westland uses Vormats to create its own internal videos. This allows them to communicate with (new) colleagues in a fast, fun, and effective way. “We started using Vormats because we used to communicate internally mostly through text, and creating video content allows us to convey emotion and visuals as well. This is great for our new colleagues, as it helps ease some of the tension by giving them a taste of the atmosphere through a video. And for our learning pathways, videos offer a nice change of pace from the existing e-learning modules.”
The Municipality of Westland uses video content in various ways:
- Learning Platform: We use a learning platform, and with Vormats we create videos for each learning pathway. In these videos, we explain what each learning pathway is about.
- Updates: Every month, we make a video announcing our new course offerings.
- Introductory videos: We use videos to introduce colleagues. This helps bridge the gap between us and makes our interactions more personal.
- Onboarding: We use video content as part of our pre-onboarding process. In a short video, we explain what new employees can expect on their first day of work. We share these internal videos on our intranet and on the screens in the cafeteria.
“Some employees do find it a bit nerve-wracking at first. Our tips: use the autocue feature, allow plenty of time, and help your colleagues so that it’s fun and not stressful. And don’t be afraid of bloopers—those make for great content to share internally, too.”
